  • Compact solar panel and regulated charging
  • Weather resistant enclosure, cable gland and vent
  • Short outdoor rated antenna connection

Tradeoff: less reserve for long cloudy periods and cold weather.

INFRASTRUCTURE BUILD

Best for hard to reach sites, winter operation and community coverage.

  • Efficient radio with serviceable mounting
  • Larger protected battery bank
  • Ten watt or larger panel with MPPT class charging
  • High quality enclosure, vent, glands and mounting plate
  • Purpose chosen antenna, grounding and strain relief

Tradeoff: requires careful mounting, maintenance planning and site permission.

Do not skip these

The parts that decide whether it lasts.

Energy margin

Design around the worst month, not the best afternoon. Cold batteries, shade and repeated cloudy days all reduce reserve.

Water management

Use downward facing glands, a pressure vent, drip loops and a serviceable enclosure. Seal the cable path, not only the lid.

Antenna placement

Height and a clear path often matter more than more transmit power. Keep the feed short and select the antenna for the actual installation.
