Build process

  1. Bench-test the radio

Flash and configure the RAK hardware before installing it in the enclosure. Confirm Bluetooth/USB access and radio operation.

  2. Lay out the enclosure

Dry-fit the board, battery holder, RF bulkhead and cable glands. Keep RF cable bends gentle and leave access to USB/reset controls where possible.

  3. Drill and mount

Install the N-type bulkhead, glands and CCTV mounting hardware. Deburr openings before installing seals.

  4. Connect RF and power

Attach the IPEX/U.FL pigtail carefully, connect the battery system and route the solar lead through a waterproof gland.

  5. Seal the enclosure

Apply silicone around penetrations as needed and use self-fusing silicone tape on outdoor RF joints.

  6. Deploy and test

Mount the node with the antenna vertical, confirm solar charging, then run range/message tests before leaving it unattended.

Build notes

  • Do not transmit without a properly connected antenna.
  • CCTV arms make it easier to aim the solar panel and position the enclosure away from obstructions.
  • Inspect outdoor seals periodically, especially after freeze/thaw cycles.
