Get something working
Learn the platform, build a sensible node and connect with an existing network or a small test group.
Prove it works
Decide what the system is for, test realistic failure cases and deploy where it adds useful coverage.
Keep it useful
Document changes, check power and connectivity, share lessons and help the people around you.
Build a PACE plan.
Mesh can be one layer of a communications plan. It should not automatically be every layer.
Primary
The normal method everyone expects to use first.
Alternate
A practical second path when the primary method is unavailable.
Contingency
A deliberately different option for a more serious disruption.
Emergency
The last workable method when the easier paths have failed.
1. Assign the paths
Write down the actual method, who has access to it and what equipment or connectivity it depends on.
2. Define the trigger
Agree on when you stop waiting on one method and move to the next. A backup nobody knows when to use is not much of a backup.
3. Exercise it
Test each layer with the internet or cellular path intentionally unavailable where appropriate. Record what failed and fix the plan.
