Why this exists
“No Bars Club isn't trying to build one giant mesh community. We're building the connections between the communities that already exist.”

That includes the people already teaching, building, testing, documenting and maintaining the technology. No Bars Club does not replace their channels, projects or communities. The Learning Center helps people discover them, understand where to start and move from watching a video to actually participating in a mesh.

What are Meshtastic and MeshCore?

Both use low bandwidth LoRa links to move small packets over long distances, but they approach networking, routing and infrastructure differently.

Meshtastic

Meshtastic is an open source mesh communication ecosystem commonly used for text messaging, position sharing, telemetry and community networks on inexpensive LoRa hardware. It has a large device ecosystem, mobile apps, maps, modules and a broad user community.

MC

MeshCore

MeshCore is an open source LoRa mesh protocol and firmware ecosystem built around companions, dedicated repeaters, room servers and standalone devices. Its infrastructure model separates ordinary clients from routing infrastructure and supports a growing collection of apps and tools.

Quick glossary

Words you will hear constantly.

A quick cheat sheet for people entering the rabbit hole.

LoRa

A long range, low data rate radio modulation used by many mesh devices.

Node

A device participating in a mesh network. Its exact role depends on firmware and configuration.

Repeater

Infrastructure intended to relay traffic and extend useful network coverage.

Companion

In MeshCore, a user facing radio typically paired with an app over Bluetooth, USB or WiFi.

Room Server

A MeshCore role that can provide shared room style messaging and stored posts.

MQTT

A lightweight publish and subscribe protocol used to move telemetry and mesh data into connected tools.

Observer

A passive MeshCore monitoring node that can publish what it hears to analysis or mapping systems.

SWR

Standing wave ratio, one indicator used when evaluating how well an antenna system is matched.

Line of sight

The physical and terrain path between two sites. Height and obstruction can matter more than raw transmit power.
