MeshCore

Great when you want companion radios plus dedicated repeater infrastructure and secure text messaging.

  1. Get a supported LoRa radio. RAK4631/WisBlock, Heltec, Seeed and other devices are supported.
  2. Install the MeshCore app on iOS, Android or desktop/web.
  3. Flash Companion firmware. Use the official web flasher and select the firmware for your exact board.
  4. Connect by Bluetooth or USB and configure the radio for your region.
  5. Discover contacts and send a message. One companion is enough to hear an existing mesh; add a repeater when you are ready to build coverage.

Meshtastic

A broad hardware ecosystem for LoRa mesh experimentation, messaging, telemetry and location sharing.

  1. Choose supported hardware. RAK WisBlock, T-Echo, Heltec and many other boards are available.
  2. Attach the antenna before powering the radio.
  3. Flash current firmware with the official Meshtastic web flasher.
  4. Connect using the mobile or web client.
  5. Set the correct LoRa region. In the United States select the appropriate US region before transmitting.

Which one should I pick?

If you're curious about both, run both. They share LoRa hardware concepts but they are separate networks and firmware ecosystems. No Bars Club covers both without pretending they are interchangeable.

First-build rule: don't start with a solar repeater. Get a portable radio working on the desk, then outside, then at elevation. Infrastructure is much easier when you already understand the client.

Learn pairing, channels, messaging, firmware updates and basic antenna behavior on a device you can carry around.

Once the radio works, improve the RF side. A good installation and clear path can matter far more than buying a more complicated board.

Then build infrastructure

Move to weatherproof repeaters, solar nodes and fixed sites after you know your firmware and local network are working.

What actually improves range?

Elevation and a clean radio path usually matter more than throwing parts at the problem. Antenna choice, feedline loss, terrain, obstructions, installation quality and network density all matter. Never treat a map marker as guaranteed coverage.
