Linux-native LoRa hardware

RASPBERRY PI MESH HATS.

A source-checked guide to LoRa HATs that turn a Raspberry Pi into a Meshtastic or compatible Linux mesh node. Every listing states what is current, what is community-built, and what is no longer purchase-ready.

8 documented boards4 current choicesVerified September 15, 2026
Connect the correct antenna before applying power. A HAT does not replace a Raspberry Pi, storage, operating-system setup or an adequate power supply. High-power boards may be restricted to licensed amateur-radio operation; confirm the board revision, band and local rules before transmitting.

Boards with a current product or ordering path

“Current” means an official product page or explicit ordering path was reachable on the verification date. It does not guarantee inventory, regulatory suitability or support for every Pi image.

MeshSmith

MeshAdv Pi HAT v1.1

Current
Pi compatibility
Pi 2 B; Pi 3 B/B+/A+; Pi 4 B/400; Pi 5/500; Pi Zero, Zero W and Zero 2 W. Not Raspberry Pi Pico.
Radio module
1 W LoRa board; assembled U.S. listing specifies 915 MHz. GPS footprint/support is included.
Ecosystem
Meshtastic using meshtasticd; MQTT is supported by the host software.
Interface
40-pin GPIO; SPI radio, UART GPS and I²C breakout.
Power
Uses the Pi 5 V rail. A separate PoE adapter can supply the build; size the Pi supply for the host, radio and accessories.
Availability
Open design files; assembled v1.1 units linked through Frequency Labs on Etsy.

ZebraHAT 1W

Direct order
Pi compatibility
Raspberry Pi 2–5, Nebra Outdoor miner and SBCs with a compatible Raspberry Pi pinout.
Radio module
E22P 915 MHz SX1262 module with TCXO, PA/LNA and 902–926 MHz filtering; up to 1 W.
Ecosystem
Meshtastic; MeshCore through the community pyMC Linux implementation.
Interface
40-pin HAT, SPI radio, GPS/UART and I²C; Qwiic and AHT20 support. HAT+ EEPROM hardware is present but documented as not active.
Power
Uses the Pi 5 V rail with onboard filtering. No official whole-system current requirement is published; provide margin for the Pi and transmitter.
Availability
U.S.-only direct ordering is documented in the project README. The separate 2 W version requires an amateur-radio call sign.

The 2 W ZebraHAT is a different, amateur-radio-only configuration. Follow the documented transmit-power limit; incorrect settings can damage its PA.

RAKwireless

RAK6421 WisMesh Pi HAT

Current
Pi compatibility
Official documentation lists Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.
Radio module
Modular: accepts RAK13300 or RAK13302 WisBlock LoRa modules. The radio is not necessarily included with the HAT.
Ecosystem
Meshtastic using meshtasticd.
Interface
Standard 40-pin header, two WisBlock IO slots, four sensor slots and onboard HAT+ EEPROM.
Power
Draws from the Pi 5 V rail and provides regulated 3.3 V and VBAT rails to attached WisBlock modules.
Availability
Active official product page. Confirm whether the chosen bundle includes a compatible regional LoRa module.

Verified designs that are not equivalent to current stock

These boards are real and documented, but their release, sales or software status blocks a general purchase recommendation.

NewtPi / PowerPi

Discontinued / archived
Pi compatibility
Raspberry Pi 40-pin HAT designs; consult the archived project files for exact board revision and pinout.
Radio module
915 MHz SX1262 high-power designs. NewtPi uses an E22-900M33S 33 dBm module.
Ecosystem
Meshtastic and amateur-radio experimentation; NewtPi also documents LoRa-APRS.
Interface
40-pin HAT, SPI, GPS/UART and I²C; NewtPi adds Qwiic, fan and DC power features.
Power

These high-power designs are documented for U.S. amateur-radio use, not as plug-and-play Part 15 consumer radios.

Waveshare / community software

SX1262 LoRa HAT family

Experimental
Pi compatibility
Raspberry Pi 40-pin models, subject to the exact Waveshare SKU and software pin mapping.
Radio module
SX1262 family; regional frequency and interface differ by exact product.
Ecosystem
Community MeshCore-on-Pi support exists. Meshtastic Linux support has reported detection problems on some HAT/revision combinations.
Interface
Do not assume all listings match: Waveshare sells similarly named UART and SPI products. Verify the schematic and SKU.
Power
Pi-supplied power; use the requirements for the exact module purchased.
Availability
Hardware is sold through multiple channels, but this directory cannot verify one interchangeable “Waveshare SX1262 HAT.” Treat it as an integration project.

How to choose

Match the HAT to the job

Fixed Meshtastic nodePiMesh-1W or MeshAdv v1.1 provide documented high-power Linux-native paths. Choose by PoE, GPS and assembly needs.
Modular WisBlock buildRAK6421 is the cleanest official modular route, but budget for a supported regional radio module if it is not bundled.
Experimenting with MeshCoreZebraHAT has the clearest explicit route here, through community pyMC. Treat it as Linux integration, not official firmware parity.

Verification and attribution

Compatibility and electrical claims were checked against manufacturer product pages or the creators’ own repositories on September 15, 2026. Availability means a page or ordering path was reachable at review time, not that stock is guaranteed.
