Meshtastic is not a replacement for cellular service. At a crowded festival, though, a small preconfigured group can give friends a separate low-bandwidth path for short messages and basic coordination when phones are struggling.

Why this guide exists: A September 19 Lost Lands community field report described two Meshtastic radios being used successfully for group messaging while cellular communication was effectively unusable in the crowd. That is one user's experience, not a controlled NBC test.
The useful part is preparation before the gate
Do not hand somebody an unconfigured radio in a parking lot and expect magic. Pair each node, name it, confirm the correct US region, confirm that every member of the group is using compatible modem and channel settings, and send test messages before leaving home.
Coordinate with the event mesh
Large events may organize around event-specific settings rather than the defaults. Check the relevant community or event thread instead of assuming a preset from another festival applies.
Keep the workflow simple
Teach nontechnical friends how to open the app, select the group conversation, send a message and recognize the node they are carrying. Fewer moving parts wins.
Do not copy somebody else's festival preset blindly
The Lost Lands discussion included community reports of MediumFast and event-specific slot/hop choices. Those details are useful evidence that crowded events may coordinate differently, but they are not a universal festival configuration. Check the current event community before changing your group.
Battery, maps and privacy matter too
Charge every node before the event and carry an appropriate power bank if runtime is uncertain. Download any maps you need before entering a congested venue. Decide what position information your group actually needs and avoid broadcasting more personal information than necessary.
What Meshtastic can and cannot do here
Meshtastic is good at short, low-data messages over LoRa. It does not provide normal phone calls, high-bandwidth internet, photo sharing or guaranteed delivery. Terrain, bodies, structures, antenna placement, congestion and incompatible settings can all affect performance. Treat it as an additional communications path, not a promise.
