YOU BOUGHT A MESHTASTIC RADIO. NOW WHAT?
If words like firmware, LoRa, node and channel mean absolutely nothing to you, perfect. Start here. We assume you know nothing and walk through one working radio from box to first message.
Your goal
By the end of this guide your device should have current Meshtastic firmware, be connected to your phone, use the correct region, have a sensible name and be able to send or receive messages.
Do not start by building a solar repeater. Make one portable device work first.

Node
One Meshtastic device on the network. Your radio is a node.
Firmware
The software installed directly on the radio. “Flashing” means installing or updating that software.
Channel
A messaging group with shared settings. Devices need compatible channel settings to exchange channel messages.
Region
The radio rules/preset for where you are operating. Set the correct region before transmitting.
RSSI / SNR
Signal measurements. You do not need to master them today. They become useful later when troubleshooting range.
Step 1
CHECK WHAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE.
You need
- A Meshtastic-supported LoRa device
- The correct antenna for the radio band
- A USB data cable if flashing by USB
- A phone for the mobile app, or a compatible computer/browser
Before powering it
Attach the antenna first. Do not intentionally transmit a radio without the appropriate antenna attached.
Also verify the exact model. “Heltec” is not specific enough. Heltec V3, V4, T114, RAK4631 and other boards use different firmware targets.
Step 2
FLASH MESHTASTIC FIRMWARE.
- Connect the device to your computer with a USB data cable.
- Open the official Meshtastic web flasher.
- Select or auto-detect your exact device.
- Select a current stable firmware release unless you have a specific reason to test something else.
- Choose Flash and follow the instructions shown for that board.
- If this is a fresh setup and the flasher offers an erase/install option, read the warning before wiping existing configuration.
If the computer cannot see the radio: try another USB cable first. A ridiculous number of “broken radio” problems are actually charge-only cables.
Step 3
CONNECT IT TO YOUR PHONE.
Bluetooth path
Install the official Meshtastic app for your phone, power on the radio, enable Bluetooth and connect to the node from inside the app. Follow any pairing code prompt shown by the device/app.
What the phone is doing
Your phone is the easy screen and keyboard. The LoRa radio is what communicates over the mesh. Your phone does not magically become a long range LoRa radio by installing the app.
Step 4
SET YOUR REGION BEFORE PLAYING WITH EVERYTHING ELSE.
Choose the region that matches where you are legally operating. In the United States, select the appropriate US region in the LoRa configuration. The region controls radio parameters intended for that regulatory environment.
Beginner rule: leave advanced LoRa settings alone at first. You do not need custom bandwidth, spreading factor or power tweaks to send your first message.
Step 5
GIVE THE NODE A NAME.
Use a short name you will recognize. Avoid putting private information such as your home address or phone number into a public node name. Save the configuration and allow the device to reboot if required.
Step 6
SEND YOUR FIRST MESSAGE.
If other nodes are nearby
Open the messages/channel area and send a simple test message. Depending on your local network and compatible channel settings, nearby nodes may receive it directly or through the mesh.
If absolutely nothing happens
That does not automatically mean your setup is broken. There may simply be no compatible Meshtastic nodes within usable radio range. Two of your own devices are the easiest controlled test.
Step 7
NOW WALK OUTSIDE.
Radio range depends heavily on terrain, buildings, antenna quality, antenna orientation, elevation and interference. A node sitting beside a computer in a basement is not a meaningful range test.
Height beats hype. Before buying amplifiers or exotic gear, try a better antenna position and more elevation.
Do not touch everything

Useful later. Not necessary for your first local LoRa message.
Advanced node roles
Leave role experimentation for later unless you know why a specific role is needed.
Custom modem settings
Your local community may use particular settings, but random changes can make you incompatible with everybody around you.
Troubleshooting
THE FIVE DUMB PROBLEMS EVERYONE HITS.
- Wrong USB cable: power works, data does not.
- Wrong firmware target: the board model was guessed instead of verified.
- No antenna or wrong antenna: unsafe for the radio and terrible for performance.
- Wrong region/settings: the node is not configured appropriately for where it is operating.
- Expecting imaginary coverage: there may be no compatible node nearby.
